hey everyone, thought I'd share this cause it helped me a lot:

I've always been pretty comfortable in the water. I grew up around the beach, body surfing and stuff, but recently I picked up some dive toys, you know, the kind that sink and you have to go down and grab 'em... It's really helped me with my breath holding and comfortability. they're really inexpensive too, just head on over to target or wherever. You can see how many you can get before you have to surface, you can get them in a color sequence, whatever you want.

Community,

The open-water around my location (Wisconsin) has become a new training area for myself and a few others.
Having been stuck indoors and in the pool all Winter long.. we were really excited to be able to move our training outdoors.
This included our swimming routines. However, our excitement tapered after our first LSD session in the lake. It was about 55*F - and we were in for about ~50 minutes... Some of the guys were acting pretty loopy afterwards. Yet, we still completed our goal.

None of this would be an issue - except our college pool closes during the summer.

I know the instructors at BUD/S have guidelines for how long they can freeze the candidates with surf torture. Charts, tables or a formula. You know? Water temp: "X" degrees = "X" Minutes of exposure.

Anyone have any insight here?
Ideally, someone would have the tables or know a formula ...

We need to know before we start with the longer swims across open water.
(Next WED is our next LSD:SWIM)

Thanks,
Mirage

This is as much for you fellas as it is for me. Just a little something to read to help us keep getting off our *** and keep kicking *** when it's early in the morning or we've got some little aches and pains or just aren't feeling that motivated. Hope this helps!

It's 0300. The squad, wearing their wetsuits, fins on their backs, still cold and wet from their submarine lockout, is stacked outside of a door. They are in the middle of enemy territory on a hostage rescue mission. No one knows what will be on the other side of the door. The MP5's they carry would glisten in the moonlight, but there is no moon tonight... and that's just the way they like it. Suddenly the team leader gives the order "BANG!" the door swings open and in a flash, everyone files in and unloads. A hostage sits ties up and two armed terrorists are taken by surprise. A terrorist reaches for his AK47. Too late, he's already in the sights "POP" he's down. Swiftly in the dead of night, 3 men rush over to detain the hostage. "CLEAR LEFT!" "CLEAR RIGHT" "ALL CLEAR COMIN OUT" is screamed. Snipers cover the escape route and watch for enemy movement. "ENEMY SPOTTED..." they say softly through the headsets, it's time to take care of the threat and get the hell out of dodge. the snipers scroll over the approaching enemy scouts with their scopes. "3-2-1 POP" they're taken out two at a time. "TARGET NEUTRALIZED". Meanwhile, the men with their rescued hostage file onto a zodiack and slink low to keep a low profile. As the snipers approach, the captain runs the engine. the men slink off into the night, out to sea, a black speck disappearing into the night. The waves slowly wash away their foot prints...

I want to be on that squad! I want to be on that mission! I want to rescue that hostage! I want to be on a team of terminators! I want to do things that no one else wants to! I want to hardest mission out there! And I want to kick it's scrawny little ***! I want to be a commando, I want to be a United States Navy SEAL! So HOOYAH! I'm gona get off my lazy ***, I'm gona get fired up and I'm gona destroy my PT! I'm gona be disciplined and focused and pay attention to detail! I'm not scared! I am tough son of a *****!

SO GET UP! FIRE IT UP! HOOYAH!

MEVANS I saw your intro post and this is something I have been wondering about for a while now. I was having some lower back issues and I found some stretches for piriformis syndrome which instantly made the pain go away. They really helped after about a week of doing the stretches and no running I am as good as new but still not running for a little while. So I have a few questions. If the piriformis stretches worked does that mean that my low back pain was caused by a tight piriformis/sciatica. Also have you dealt with this at BUD/S and what would you recommend to keep it from coming back?

There are about 25 of us in the Seattle area (and more elsewhere) who are at least 40 years old and training to meet or exceed the min standards for Seal PST. We realize that we're much, much too old (and ugly) to be Seals but would like to train around a common and meaningful fitness goal.

Some of us are ex-military, some are ex-athletes, all are in good shape (relatively speaking) and think that between jobs, families, old injuries, and our age, meeting or exceeding min. PST would be a difficult but achievable goal. We also think it could be an ongoing goal, a great way to maintain the camaraderie we had before life interrupted and know that this concept appeals to lots of people in our demographic. And frankly, we're no longer inspired by traditional athletes, we think half marathons are lame, but all agree that Seals are badass.

We're looking to work with a trainer who'd be available to work with the group and with individuals on ad-hoc basis. We are looking for someone to administer the group, encourage folks to keep up with workouts (most likely via online tools) and every once in awhile administer a simulated PST at nearby facility. As we're all busy and live in different parts of town, we'll almost all workout individually, just getting together in person for simulated PST's and online to talk smack with eachother.

We've seen some of the SealFit stuff but that's targeted at prospective candidates or folks trying to see how far they can push themselves. We're not doing that, just trying to work toward a common fitness goal.

Any recommendations or direction welcome.

That means I'm going to have two full months I can dedicate to working out and I'm looking for a partner or partners interested in meeting up. Two things I should mention though is that I'm putting this out about two to three weeks before I can actually do much because I have my final exams coming up but I wanted to get a dialogue started. Second my swimming is atrocious and if you can I'd really like some help not only learned to combat side stroke but improving every aspect of my swim routine(or lack of one).

I was about 13 years old when I started getting migraines. I was prescribed a couple different medications which never worked. Then changed my diet, eliminating certain preservatives which can cause migraines and that helped a lot through my teen years. I am 24 now and I haven't had a migraine for so long, I cant remember, but it has probably been about a year.

According to the medical waiver section which reads, "Frequent or debillitating migraines is an automatic disqaulifier"

Since I was a teen, they became less frequent, and not as bad. And now I haven't had one for so long I feel as though maybe I grew out of them. When I was a teen, I would have one around 1-3 times a month. However Probably less than 10 since my teen years, and none in the last year or so.

My question is, do I need to bring up my history of migraines, since they are no longer frequent? Or should I tell them I just dont have them anymore, but did as a teen, when I get my physical? Thanks.

My swim coach's doctor told him about it. It smells bad but spray it in chew and work it around then it drains out and the germs and crap are all dead. If you don't have white vinegar most other kinds work they just smell worse. It prevents infections from the water as well as all that nasty crap that gets in from swimming in a scummy pond and other places.

Something like this should be helpful for everyone. Just like the running and swimming Hoo-ya threads give you an idea on how others train, so will this.
I'm actually on a recovery day so I'm not PTing and thus have no workout to post, but I'm interested in what others are up to.

Hi,
sorry if this is the wrong place for this post. As I am from Ireland, my parents are also from Ireland I have Irish citizenship and I want to be a Navy SEAL when I grow up, I heard that if you do a year in the U.S Armed Forces you can apply for citizenship, is this true? So I was considering the U.S Marines to get citizenship but from what I hear it's very hard to change to the SEALs and right now it's impossible. Bear in mind I am 14 and by the time this is relevant the SEALs might be taking prior service. Is there any sort of programme for cases like mine that helps to get citizenship. Any answers are greatly appreciated.

Hey guys!

I am wondering if the PTG is suitable for any relatively fit young male to achieve a level of fitness necessary to join and excel in special operation training courses, not just BUD/S. I know that it has been specifically tailored to enhance the SEAL PST score but because "my unit" has not published such a training guide I wanted to use the PTG. Although some more specific training could be necessary a few months before taking the test I thought the PTG would evenly train me to an elite level. My most important goals are to become fit in all domains of fitness, develop a strong running base and prevent injuries especially in the legs/knees. I have no athletic background and been training so far with a crossfit spin-off and I am worried that this could set me up for injury as it has no programmed progression and I think I am adding to much over the top pm workouts leading to exhaustion, injury and colds. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Regards,
Felix

Hello everyone,

I had a head injury 2 years ago (loss of consciousness over 24 hours). I was cleared about 90 days after the incident to do everything as normal and have not suffered any post traumatic symptoms since. That being said, I was denied enlistment at first but I am in the workings of getting more testing done (MRI and neuropsychological tests probably) and resubmit a new package to try to get enlisted - as I was told I would be reconsidered with new medical information. Thing is, since the injury I have done very well. I ran a $15 million retail store (hhgregg) in Chicago (I moved from Indianapolis and lived there on my own) and also hired and trained everyone who helped me run it. I set up my own training a few months back (that actually piggy backs off of the NSW Training Guide) to take on a triathlon on June 16th. I am just fine to say the least.

That being said, after I resubmit a new package - say I get cleared from the waiver authority to proceed and I kill the PST (goal is a very attainable, almost there - sub 9 min CSS swim - 125 Pushups - 110 Situps - 25 pullups - Sub 8 minute 1.5 mile run- and am in the DEP - as I understand I could potentially be denied by NSW to get into BUD/s. Does anyone have any experience with this type of situation? I understand TBI's are a huge deal in the military but I am A-OK. After my journey of getting into the Navy - I find it disheartening that I could STILL be turned down -yet again- from succeeding with my life-long dream of becoming an SO. Comments? Questions? Thank you for everyone who takes the time to read this and a special thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this subject.

p.s - I know opinions are opinions and even saying that, nobodies opinion will keep me from trying to become an SO. So speak freely!

Thanks,

Miller

Manual of the Medical Dept. US Navy reads:

2. PTA greater than 1 hour is permanently disqualifying for candidates. Waiver may be entertained for designated SO personnel after 1 year if brain MRI and neuro- logic and neuropsychological evaluations are normal.

Hey guys!

Has anyone heard of the Navy Seal Physical Fitness Guide from 1997? It seems to be an official document of over 300 pages. Can it be seen as some kind of addition or background knowledge source for the PTG or is it detrimental to the training purpose we seek? I like the level of detail and graphical representation of the exercises and topics but was just wondering if this document is leading me in the wrong direction? Any advice would be much appreciated. I have conducted a search and study of the threads on this page but could not return any result that would answer my question.
I would love to train with equally motivated and fit people in hopes of pushing each other towards our goals safely yet effectively. I don't have a car but if you do we could drive to the beach 10 minutes away and train there, or we could hit any of the numerous running trails around campus. Thank you, and hooyah.

Hey guys I recently became interested in SWCC, and by interested I mean my PST next week is going to get me a contract. :-D Anyway I'm not asking because it might scare me away or anything like that (impossible), I just would like a little real world info on what I can expect in the SWCC life with regards to family. Do you have the ability to plan anything like trips, weddings, etc? Generally how much time per year does the average Boat man get to spend off deployment? I say this all in comparison to a regular Navy job. I know for a fact I will love my job and yearn to be back at it when I'm not doing it, but I do also have a high family value so I was just curious for some input in the area. Thanks ahead of time for responses.

Thanks to my parents and optimism I know i will never quit, I never have, in fact never really thought about quitting. It was never and still is not ever an option. It just doesnt enter my mind. If you allow yourself to consider quitting you might have already lost. Obviously this post isnt necessarily reply provoking, but I just wanted to give an inspiration rant. Thanks all.
