  • Backup Contracts????

    I talked to someone who dropped out of BUDS during hell week and he said the Navy used to let you choose another "Special Warefare" rate so he then became an AIRR. He said now the navy doesn't do this anymore. If for any reason whether DOR or medical issues and the instructors dont let you complete Seal training, that you will fall to the needs of the Navy. Now don't get me wrong i am 100% committed to becoming a seal and i have absolutely zero intentions in quitting. But i was wondering if it is possible (For ex.) to get a dive contract on your paperwork so you can atleast be guranteed a job in special warefare that can later on be transferable to seals, heaven forbid you get sick or injured and they dont let you continue your Buds training. I know it is important to have a no quit attitude, but it made me think when i talked to this guy who quit. He said in buds prep and basic every one had the no quit "i will never ring that bell" attitude but he said once buds kicked off people would ring the bell anyways because its not for them. I have absolutely no intentions in quiting but i just want to make sure if i get removed from training due to injury that the navy wont make me swap the poop decks and i will atleast be able to obtain a special warefare job.

    Re: Backup Contracts????

    The answer is no, there are not nor have there ever been back-up contracts. When you are dropped from any course you are given choices of where to go next based on what is available throughout the Navy. Every guy that drops from BUD/S for whatever reason (MED, DOR, ect) , immediately wants to go EOD/DIVER/AIRR/SWCC.

    A couple things to remember;

    1. All the NSO/NSW professions have their own individual contracts that folks are entering the Navy for.

    2. You are now telling a Master Chief Community manager (SWCC/EOD/DIVER/AIRR) that his/her chosen profession was your back-up or secondary choice on top of which you are telling him/her that you should now get a second chance at a special program (without first going to the fleet) before someone in the fleet who has been waiting their 2 or more years to apply.

    Has it happened before? Of course, but I can tell you, it’s rare.

    Best of luck

      Thank you your answer was very helpful,
      Is it possible to get a job that is not specwar say corpman designated on your contract if you were to get medically rolled from your primary choice?

          Re: Backup Contracts????

          I know this has been out for a week, however what if say at some point I want to go from SWCC to SEALs, or SEALs to SWCC. Would I have to basically start over as far as training goes, and what about specialties, if you go from SEALs to SWCC and are say a sniper or CQB specialist, how does that transfer to SWCC. Thanks. I have not mentioned the other NSW Groups however all the groups can be switched out say EOD to AIRR or SEAL to AIRR or AIRR to SWCC all those combinations.

            Re: Backup Contracts????

            If you are in the Navy and are interested in other programs than your current field you would apply as all other in "in fleet" candidates. There are requirements for all programs that you must qualify for whether you come from "off the street" or "in fleet".

            What we discuss here on the Forum are careers in SEAL and SWCC.
