How to do log pt without a log?

I am just wondering, if holding a weight kindove on your shoulder will be just as effective as a log, thinking that it has much more covering room to carry. Any thoughts?

there's exercises for your shoulders you can do but I've heard training MOVEMENTS rather than muscle groups is more beneficial so any kind of overhead movement would be comparable. If you use military press I would go with a tighter grip. In videos of log pt I've seen your hands are pretty close together where as in the traditional shoulder press your arms are a little wider than shoulder width apart. I think the log is somewhere around 200 pounds so between a 6 man boat crew you're looking at 30-35 pounds per person so you could use a 35 pound kettler ball or dumbbell and practice the motions (i.e right shoulder rest to overhead position to left shoulder rest and back)

Something to think about as well could be to really focus on building up the strength of the shoulder stabilizing muscles to make sure that you have as little chance of injury as possible. This will also allow you to build strength and stamina in the larger muscles of the shoulder.

I've been working on my handstand and I've found it helps a lot with log PT. Even if you can't do a handstand you can lean against a wall and do static holds.

Military press is very effective in preparing you for log pt, but usually what i do is carry a 45lbs plate above my head and just walk around with it or you can do standing still, your choice.

Personally I've found that if you start with say a 40 pound dumbbell on one shoulder, life it with both hands and lock out over your head, hold for two and than lower to other shoulder, its a fairly good way to build strength for log pt.

I just use a log cut to about 1-2ft and it have one that weighs 30lbs and another thats 35lbs and I just hold them over my head and do shoulder presses etc with them. Pretty cut and dry but I think it works. My $0.02.

Hand stand push ups is a good alternative, thats what I do and there pretty difficult.

Just use a dumbbell of about 30 to 60 pounds depends on how strong you are and do the standard log pt movements. Make sure you have a spotter tho if you drop it it might cause brain damage. If you do sports in high school have fellow athletes train with you by finding a log and doing log training with them for the real experience.

I'm not sure where you live or what resources you have available, but I went over to a lumber mill (I live in farm-land northern California) and asked to have a foot/foot and a half by 8 inch/foot in diameter log cut and stripped (they made me shell out $5, but whatever). I think it's oak (which is denser and therefore weighs more) and those dimensions weigh 35 - 40 lbs. at least, though all I had to weight it with was a regular ole bathroom scale haha. Divide the 200 lbs for a log at BUD/S by 6 guys, the weight comes out to be as such Anyway, doing overhead presses, sit ups, curl carries, squats, etc. with this thing are challenging and it really works your hand balance when doing overhead presses, as the log is wider than your hands... an issue I never thought was important. It really lets you move around and get an ***-kicking workout. It's also great, because you know if that thing falls on your head, it's going to hurt, hah, so it's even more motivation to keep that thing up.

That's exactly what I did besides the going to a sawmill. I just used a piece from a tree that fell down near my house. I even weighed it with a bathroom scale too. lol

But yeah honestly this seems closer to the real thing than a dumbell in my opinion.

I put bench plates and other stuff for weight in an old back pack, and use it to do the same exercises as you would with a log. It works the same muscles, and I didn't any money on it either.

Use a 35 pound weight.. Its said that each BUD/S candidate lifts that much during log PT

    Hi tfranc,

We were reading your post about log PT. You're very ingenious. We were inspired by how dedicated you are in your training. Do you have a mentor yet?

Now that you've been doing log pt for three weeks, and maybe longer, can you update us on the forum?
