    Current status of prior enlisted

Hey everyone. I am new to the forums and just wanted to say its been a big help reading all the different posts on here. I was wondering about the current status regarding prior enlisted getting a contract. A quick bit about me: 27 years old. Prior enlisted QMSN. Got out at the end of 06. 3 1/2 years college Compuer engineering/Bio Engineering. Honorable discharge. Rated at 10% disabled from navy and 30% VA (Because of scars and a surgery). Competitive PST scores. I want to go to graduate school later in life and do SEALS NOW! if possible. Am I done before I even started? Give it to me straight.

    Thanks for any help.

The Navy's current policy is that no prior service applicants are being given the opportunity for a contract. Perhaps in the future that will change but as of now the answer is no. There is no proposed end date to the policy.

    Best of luck

Re: Current status of prior enlisted

Thanks Senior Chief, for the quick response. My heart has been in my throat since but it was expected. I'm not going to stop trying to find a way though. I know there is always the option of going officer and trying to make it that way but it seems even slimmer odds of getting a slot and given my age plus the competition; Enlisted always seemed a better way to go.. I thought.

One of the things I was really hoping for was that the QM rate didn't exist anymore. back in 04,05,06 there was a lot of talk of doing away with it completely and making us into OS's or some other rate that we qualified for. If this were true and I was qualified to re enlist I would need a new rate. And if things work they way I perceive them to I could possible rate as SO? (special operator) Hahaha.. a lot of if!

From what I understand this is not the case though and the QM rate still exists in the US navy as it always has? (so if I re-enlist it will be as QM?) And if the current policy didn't stand I would have to "contract" an SO rate to even get to bud/s no matter what.

bottom line: You must have a contract to get to bud/s now? (before I could be QM and still go to bud/s)

sorry if this is confusing. i'm working 2 jobs and going to school. this forum seems like the best place for quick/accurate info. I'll be talking to a normal recruiter in a few weeks.

    Thanks for any help.

Iím trying to decipher your question. Are you asking if you could re-enlist to go to BUD/S? Do I understand that you are currently a reservist?

If you are a reservist you would have to be released from the reserves, walk into a recruiter and join the Navy. If you have less than 180 days on the books you are not considered prior service.

Re: Current status of prior enlisted

    Hey Senior -

Thanks for the quick response. Sorry for the delayed reply.

I joined the Navy when I was 17 and did four years with an honorable discharge. I am 27 now and am no longer in the inactive reserves.
    My central question is this:

If I were to re-enlist into the Navy with a contract to.. lets say ... IS. Would it be possible to get orders to BUD/S from A school? I understand there are no contracts to BUD/S for prior enlisted as of right now but would this be a way to work it? I know this used to be possible. What are your suggestions for my particular situation?

    Thanks for any advice,
    -Mots

Re: Current status of prior enlisted

To enter BUD/S you would have to complete 2 years in the Navy before being eligible. IS may have a longer "tax" following your A school. Each community manager has to release you from your current rate to get an SO contract. You would also run into an age waiver issue as you would be older than 28.

So to answer your question no, you would not be able to get a BUD/S contract by taking the screening test @ Intelligence Specialist "A" school as was the case in the past (I did this from PR). Were you to join the Navy the minimum time you would probably wait is 2 years.

    Best of luck
